CAMCORDERS
Buying a camcorder can be pretty confusing. There are so many choices and price points out there, that it can be difficult to choose the right product for you. With formats like DVD and miniDV becoming more and more obsolete, and quality of cheaper cameras improving, it is easy to get lost in the shuffle.
Buying a camcorder can be pretty confusing. There are so many choices and price points out there, that it can be difficult to choose the right product for you. With formats like DVD and miniDV becoming more and more obsolete, and quality of cheaper cameras improving, it is easy to get lost in the shuffle.
Never fear, for Technizmo is here! We've got some quick tips about buying a camcorder depending on what your needs are!
Hard disk and miniDV camcorders
If you’re looking for a good camera that will allow you to upload and edit your footage on a Mac or PC, you have a few options to consider. For this type of work, an HDD, SD, or miniDV camcorder would be best. These formats allow you to upload your footage via USB or Firewire for editing on a computer. If you own a PC, you’ll want to buy a camera that supports USB uploading. If you own a Mac, you can choose a Firewire or USB model, as long as your Mac has a Firewire port (most Macs do).
Who is this for? People who want a good quality camera, the ability to store lots of footage at a time, and people who want to burn their final product to DVD for personal use or distribution.
miniDVD camcorders
If you are mostly looking for a camera that you can use to record family gatherings or events, and simply want to be able to playback footage right away (via DVD), then a DVD camcorder is right for you! These camcorders record your footage directly to a DVD, then finalize it so you can pop it into your DVD player and watch it right away! Note that you can not do any sort of editing on your computer with these types of camcorders!
Who is this for? People who want to be able to watch their footage right away on their TV without doing any editing.
Pocket camcorders
If you’re looking for a small, compact camcorder to take with you when you travel, consider a pocket camcorder. These camcorders range in price from $99-$300 (most costing around $200) and are great for quick capturing of video. You can edit the footage recorded with these cameras, as most support SD card storage and USB uploading. More and more pocket camcorders are becoming HD compatible, meaning you can record and edit high definition video! Most pocket camcorders can also capture still images.
Who is this for? People looking for an inexpensive, HD camera who want to post their content online (YouTube, etc.)
