REVIEW: Madden 08 for PlayStation 3

Every August marks the month of the latest and greatest Madden game. Men and Women ( mostly men ) from all ages dart to their nearest game store to pick it up, then call work and complain of something we know as "Madden Fever".

When you first start playing the game, your hands start to sweat. You want to be the best, but soon realize that you first must know how to play. Each game begins with the players from both teams running out on the field. With past Madden games, you could maybe get by without reading the Players Guide, but good luck with that with Madden 08. Maybe it's because I'm not the best gamer, but it took me a day to learn just how to run with my Quarterback. Every year all they do is just add more features, and upgrade the graphics a bit. If you play against the computer with rookie mode, its extremely easy ( which is good for starters ) but it's difficult on pro, let along all pro. The players become smarter, and read up on your plays. You must always be on your toes, or else you will always turn over the ball. When you fumble, there used to be a notice that said "FUMBLE!" which grabbed your attention, but now there is no notice at all. Some people might like that, but I didn't care for it much. Even though they try to make the game "realistic", I'd put my controller down after a play, not knowing that the ball popped out, and the other team is running down the field, about to score a touchdown. Franchise mode is just about the same as other Madden games, you pick a football team and travel with with for their whole season. I wish that the game gave me more chances to challenge calls, because some of them were kind of sketchy. One of my favorite features is halftime. I remember when I played ESPN 2k5, all they would do for halftime is show pictures of some of the biggest plays. On Madden, they show the 5 or 6 top plays, and you can watch any of them!

PlayStation3 games are all on Blu Ray discs, they hold 10 times as much data as a regular DVD. The stadium, players, and coaches looked real, but the people in the stands still lacked that "real" feeling. With the Blu Ray Discs, they should be able to make a few changes. I think it would be really cool if they made a feature so that if you team is losing by a ton, fans would start leaving earlier. They tend to show teams coaches on the sideline doing awkward poses. They all either look Super Fat or Old, so they should of spent more time working on that.

I don't have much to say about the controls, because you will just have to read the manual. I've heard complaints that the developers tried to make the controls too much like the Xbox360 controls. They also wished that they left the controls the same as the PlayStation2.

If you're looking for a great Football game for your console, this one is the best for your bucks. Although there are a few downsides, it beats out the competitors. Madden doesn't talk as much in this game compared to the previous Madden games ( Thank God ), instead thay have a normal announcer. I think in the future, they should go back to maybe having two announcers though.

Editor's Score: 8/10
